Pictuesque grounds of the Jackson Bailey Art Center and Museum

The Jackson Bailey Art Center and Museum is situated on twelve picturesque acres.

Jackson Bailey was a self-taught folk artist who overcame childhood and adult illnesses to create the largest religious painting in the world. Although the 11-foot-tall by 1,100-foot-long “The Life of Christ” is Mr. Bailey's best known work, he also painted many other works at smaller scales, and worked as a toy developer, graphic designer, and illustrator. Mr. Bailey designed the State Seal of Georgia, the DeKalb County (Georgia) Flag, and the City Seal of Rutledge, Georgia. His love of history informed all of his works, and he strived in particular to make his religious works historically, as well as biblically, accurate. This article “An Artist's Passion,” which appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was written shortly before Mr. Bailey’s death in 2004, discusses his life and the unusual story of his most famous work.

The Jackson Bailey Art Center and Museum contains many of Mr. Bailey's works, both religious and secular. It is situated on twelve picturesque acres, and is available for weddings and other group events. The art center, museum and grounds are open Tuesday through Saturday by appointment only. Admission to the art center and museum, including a guided tour by Mr. Bailey's wife, Beverly, is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.

Online, you’ll find more information about Mr. Bailey’s life and works at the Jackson Bailey Memorial web site run by his son, Jackson Bailey III. Although not affiliated with the Jackson Bailey Art Center in Rutledge, the web site gladly accepts questions about Mr. Bailey and can direct visitors to more information about the museum in Rutledge.
